Big Bi+ Questions
Why is it important to fly your bi+ colours?

On this episode of Big Bi+ Questions we got to know our co-host Raena a little better, including finally putting her through our bi+ stereotype research survey, which she’s been waiting for weeks to get involved in. We then dove into our big question: ‘why is it important to fly your bi+ colours?’, including chatting about the history and meaning of the bisexual and pansexual flags, how it feels to see someone proudly flagging their multi-gender attraction, and how symbols can signal safety and community.
If any of the topics in this episode brought up difficult or intense feelings for you, we encourage you to reach out for support from a trusted friend, community, or mental health professional. You can find a list of organisations you can turn to for support at joy.org.au/support.

Big Bi+ Questions
Why is there bi+ erasure in the animal kingdom?

Why do so many animals get caught up in the human debate about bisexuality? This week on Big Bi+ Questions, Tamzyn, Little Jase, and Raena are joined by our resident scientist Dr Cat to explore bisexual erasure in the animal kingdom. From bonobos to penguins, lions to Lisa Mitchell’s Animals, we ask: do animals even care about labels, or is that just a human thing? We dive into same-sex behaviour in nature, what it teaches us about diversity, and why anthropomorphising can be both fascinating and misleading. Plus, plenty of laughs, curious tangents, and a few feathery facts along the way.

Big Bi+ Questions
Why are you asking?
The big question in this episode is a little different. It’s not a question that bi+ people get asked a lot and it’s not a question bi+ people ask themselves. It’s a question bi+ people might respond with when asked about their identity – Why are you asking?

Raena, Jase, and Dave were joined by JOY presenter CJ, who shared their multi-gender attracted identity journey before we had a chat about how we can respond to questions and comments about our identities.

Why is bi+ visibility important?

In this episode of Big Bi+ Questions, we were joined by Andrew “Doogie” MacDougall, host of the Pride & Puck podcast and an advocate for LGBTQIA+ inclusion. Doogie shared his journey with settling into his multi-gender attracted identity and we unpacked what bi+ visibility looks like across different environments, how it’s shifted with age or political climate, and what subtle forms of visibility can mean.

Does being bisexual exclude non-binary people?
In celebration of International Non-Binary People’s Day (14th July), the team had a chat about a misconception that bi+ are sometimes asked about: ‘does being bisexual exclude non-binary people?’.

Our non-binary co-host Little Jase shared an insight into their identity and journey and we talked about ways you can play, test things out, and feel comfortable with your gender expression.

The book and movie that we mentioned during the episode is ‘I Wish You All The Best’ by Mason Deaver.

Where are all the bi+ sports people? To help us answer this big question, we were joined by passionate sports inclusion advocate and proud bisexual man, Kade Matthews.
We also welcomed back previous guest Joey Talison and introduced our new co-host Raena to the Big Bi+ Questions team.
Together, we had a chat about bi+ visibility in professional and non-professional sports, why openly bi+ athletes are still rare, and how gender, media, and sporting culture shape the experiences of multi-gender attracted players.

Are bi+ people welcome in the leather community?

Do you want to be part of the leather community but worried you’ll be excluded because you’re multi-gender attracted? It’s a question that bi+ people can ponder, especially because the leather community can sometimes be perceived as a closed community.

On this episode of Big Bi+ Questions, we were joined by Andrea, Brock, and Johnny from Melbourne Leather to chat about the leather community and how it is fast becoming more inclusive.

Big Bi+ Questions
Do I have to come out as bi+?
Coming out usually doesn’t happen just once, but coming out once can sometimes mean you have to be ‘out’ everywhere. Whilst others may be able to choose where they are ‘out’.
Joseph Talison, author of ‘What not to say to a bisexual’ and ‘Discovering Douglas’ joined the Big Bi+ Questions team for a chat about coming out and being out, and why it’s sometimes harder for bi+ people to come out compared to gay and lesbian people.

Am I Actually A Lesbian?

How do you know if a label still fits? That’s really what this episode’s big question is about – whether that’s someone who currently labels themselves as multi-gender attracted but thinks they might be a lesbian, or someone who labels themselves as lesbian but thinks a multi-gender attracted label might suit them better.
The Big Bi+ Questions team were very grateful to be joined by our guest Demetra Giannakopoulos as well as our guest co-host Mia Bizzotto, who shared their experiences and thoughts.

This episode of Big Bi+ Questions is a little different. Usually the big question of the episode is something bi+ people get asked a lot or a question we ask ourselves. This time around, it’s a question that non-bi+ people might ask: How can I be a beautiful ally for the bi+ community?

It’s a question many bi+ people had asked themselves at some point. In this episode, we were joined by Felipe to explore why this question came up, how we have navigated it, and what it might say about internalised bi-phobia, our attraction, and the pressure to “pick a side.”
Felipe also shared his journey of discovering his bi+ identity, which involved a move from Colombia to Australia, being supported by Thorne Harbor Health, and finding community with the Melbourne Bisexual Network, now merged with Bisexual Alliance Victoria, becoming a single organisation known as Bi+ Pride Victoria.
