"Read your Bible, pray every day if you want to grow" is a song I remember from Sunday school. The words intimate that growth is expected of a Christian. The Bible also makes it clear that Christians are meant to grow. Not only are Christians meant to grow, but it is also possible to track your spiritual growth as a Christian.
