This journal article examines Coca-Cola's research funding agreements with public institutions. Through Freedom of Information requests, the authors analyzed contracts to assess the company's potential influence over research. Their findings indicate that while Coca-Cola doesn't have absolute control, agreements often grant them rights to review studies before publication and the ability to terminate research. The paper suggests that current disclosure practices may not fully reveal the extent of corporate influence and recommends more transparent reporting, including the publication of funding agreements. Ultimately, the study highlights concerns about the independence of commercially funded public health research.
