Becoming Anchored S6E7: How To Respond To Comments About Your Body
In this episode of Becoming Anchored, co-host and licensed therapist Laura Deneen is joined by co-host and licensed therapist Lauren Jackson.
Together they discuss how you can respond if someone comments on your body or you overhear someone commenting on someone else’s body.
Key Takeaways:
Check In With Self: When an experience like this happens, notice what your thoughts, emotions, and automatic beliefs about yourself are. Lauren discusses attuning to her clients and validating their emotions.
How Do I Respond?: Laura and Lauren discuss common responses to these experiences. They also discuss that different people have different responses to these types of comments. Some individuals may choose to set a boundary, others may feel frozen and need time to process what to do moving forward.
Shift Your Perspective: It may feel incredibly difficult to experience a comment about your body, and Lauren encourages you to shift your internal dialogue from, “What is wrong with me?” to “What does this say about the other person?” Together we discuss why people may comment on your body or others’ bodies.
This episode provides insight into how to respond in a compassionate way towards self when a comment about your body or someone else’s body is made and how to navigate it.
Homework: Think about a time where you have been on the receiving end of a body image comment and notice what you were feeling in the moment (thoughts, emotions, beliefs) and notice how you want to respond differently to yourself next time.
Affirmation: “I offer myself compassion around these experiences.”
Friend, we are passionate about offering more support beyond the insights and advice in this podcast.
