We had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Cevan Smithson! He discussed his interest in exercise, with a BS in exercise science from Angelo State University. After working in the oil field, he returned to ASU, but this time for physical therapy school. He explains the benefits of resistance training, from increased bone mineral density to decreased mortality, as well as decreased mortality from cancer related issues. We also delve into the misconceptions about the geriatric population and ageism, such as modifying exercises prematurely. He also discusses how sedentary lifestyles can lead to bad effects, such as cardiovascular disease and weakness (especially functionally), that we attribute to aging. Instead, we must be loading our tissues for our benefit, and to recognize our own biases as physical therapists. We also discuss how pain can be managed and decreased while working functionally. We also discuss managing the mental side of pain as we age, especially with those for osteoporosis/osteopenia, or afraid of being on the floor. We must talk about the benefit of physical therapy treatment and educate them. Cevan also discusses the benefits of working with the geriatric population, from strength gains to building trust.
