It might be hard to believe but this is the 25th episode of the Crushed Monocle Podcast! To celebrate 25 episodes, Jon and Coop are taking a look at 1998. Exactly 25 years ago!
After the Telecommunications Act of 1996 (
see Episode 2) changed the way America listened to music, the industry was on a road to recovery. But with the growing pains behind it (
see Episode 12) what exactly constitutes as business as usual? The answer was categorizing with purpose! Hip-Hop became Pop, Pop became an actual genre, and Rock was all but irrelevant. However, that wasn’t the whole story. Out from the ashes of questionable record deals and buried sophomore albums came a new genre. Born of angst, discord, baggy jeans, and chunky riffs was the rise of Nu-Metal. Ugh.
Thankfully all wasn’t lost In fact, Jon and Coop realize a lot of the stuff they hated in 1998 has actually held up pretty well.
