Episode 26: The October Book Haunt

In this episode of the Bad Ass Bookclub Podcast, we’re closing out BAB’s spooky season with chills, cheers, and a few surprises in our Spooktacular Season Finale!

Katie kicks things off with a sneak peek at her freshly arrived fright fest, Scared to Death Vol. 6: Fan Stories Collection, just in time for one last scare. Ashley follows with a spoiler-free love letter to The God of the Woods by Liz Moore, calling it one of her top reads of the season.

Then the ladies dive into their shared read, The October Film Haunt by Michael Wehunt. From eerie atmospheres to literary chills, they unpack what worked, what didn’t, and while they had notes, they’re eager to see how Wehunt’s craft continues to grow.

As the curtain closes on Season One, Ashley and Katie thank the Baddies for a thrilling run and hint that there may be a trick or two still lurking in the shadows.

So grab a carving knife (for your pumpkin) and press play, it’s time to wrap up October with a hauntingly good listen!

Episode 25: Mild, Not Wild

In this episode of Bad Ass Bookclub Podcast, we’re stirring the cauldron over one magical read: Payback’s a Witch by Lana Harper. It’s small-town charm, sapphic revenge, and magical tournaments (oh my), basically Hallmark with a hint of heat, and we are here for it… mostly.

Katie’s biggest takeaway? She’s officially campaigning for a universal spice thermometer on every book cover. (Publishers, take note- the people deserve to know what they’re getting into!) Ashley enjoyed the story’s cozy vibes, but had a few notes of her own, wishing for more depth, details and pumpkin spice.

From sizzling banter to enchanting rivalries, we break down what worked, what didn’t, and why Payback’s a Witch still managed to cast a spell on us.

Brew a potion (or a latte) and get comfy, this one’s warm, witchy, and a little wicked.

Episode 24: Spooky or Spicy? Well, Witch Is It?

In this episode of Bad Ass Bookclub Podcast, things are heating up. The ladies are recording in the evening hours (that means more laughs), Katie went to another concert and there’s a game! What more could you ask for?

Ashley wraps up The Confessions by Paul Bradley Carr, the fast-paced, smart techno-thriller she devoured. Katie sums up her final experience with Nightmare at 20,000 Feet: Horror Stories by Richard Matheson, sharing her favorite eerie tales from the master of horror. Sneak peek: It’s sharp, chilling, and just shy of what she was hoping for.

Then, the ladies kick off their shared read, Payback’s a Witch by Lana Harper, where small-town magic meets Hallmark-movie charm with a hint (or maybe a handful) of spice. Expect laughter, tangents, and plenty of debate over what’s spooky vs. spicy.

Fill your cauldrons and get cozy, this episode is ready to cast its spell.

Episode 23: Confessions at 20,000 Feet

In this week’s Bad Ass Bookclub Podcast, the ladies wrap up Stephen Graham Jones’ The Buffalo Hunter Hunter, a novel they admired but admit was tough to stomach. Dark, brutal, and relentlessly heavy, this Indigenous horror masterpiece left Ashley and Katie both haunted and impressed.

Ashley shifts gears into the scandal-filled pages of Paul Bradley Carr’s The Confessions, covering chapters 1–19. Twists, secrets, and plenty of topical fodder fuel the discussion as she unpacks the opening of this modern literary thriller.

Katie closes things out with a dip into Richard Matheson’s Nightmare at 20,000 Feet. From classic Twilight Zone vibes to eerie short story selections, she captures the unsettling brilliance of Matheson’s imagination.

Heavy, shocking, and as always, funny! Whether you’re here for vampire lore, Silicon Valley scandals, or mid-century scares, strap in, Baddies. This week, the ride is turbulent.

Episode 22: Good Stab, Bad Sever

In this episode of Bad Ass Bookclub Podcast, the ladies are knee-deep in haunted attics and blood-soaked prairies. With the final half of Grady Hendrix’s How to Sell a Haunted House, Ashley and Katie laugh, cringe, and gasp their way through puppets, grief, and Hendrix’s signature blend of horror and hilarity. Funny, gruesome, and, yes downright sad, this conclusion had the gals reaching for a tissue.

And because no spooky-season episode is complete without some chaos, the ladies play a brand-new game: Weapon of Choice. In classic horror story scenarios, Katie quizzes Ashley on what she’d grab when things go bump in the night. Some answers are more practical (and hilarious) than others.

Then it’s back to the plains with the middle third of Stephen Graham Jones’ The Buffalo Hunter Hunter, where tragedy and resilience collide. The slaughter of the buffalo cuts deep, and we discuss Good Stab’s complicated role as both hero and demon, depending on who’s telling the story. Sad, thought-provoking, and impossible to look away from.

Whether you’re here for haunted house hijinks, Indigenous horror, or just to find out what on earth Ashley would do with a curtain rod, this episode is packed with thrills, chills, and book-loving banter.

Strap in, Baddies! It’s about to get choppy.

Episode 21: House Hunters with Pupkin and Cat Man

In this episode of Bad Ass Bookclub Podcast, we’re off to a hauntingly good start to Spooky Season! This week the ladies tackle their double shared reads: The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones and How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix.

First up is the historical fiction horror pick, The Buffalo Hunter Hunter. The ladies are enjoying the gruesome, genre-crossing ride that intertwines vampire lore with the U.S. western expansionist era. While discussing themes and characters present in chapters 1-9, Katie and Ashley highlight the way Jones layers timelines and perspectives, and the captivating use of Native American terminology to deepen the novel’s cultural roots. With two-thirds of the story still to go, many questions remain, like: Where’s Cat Man?

Then it’s on to Hendrix’s How to Sell a Haunted House, where playthings and family drama collide. Covering chapters 1–20, the ladies dive into the Joyner family’s grief, the hilariously horrifying antics of Pupkin the puppet, and swap their favorite WTF worthy Grady moments. To top it off, they play a quick round of Stage Fright, a hilarious game featuring the five stages of grief. You read that right.

Whether you prefer historical horror with bite or a campy haunt, this episode delivers both chills and chuckles. Cozy up, press play, and join the hunt!

Episode 20: Killer Thrillers & Thriller Killers

In this milestone 20th episode of Bad Ass Bookclub Podcast, the ladies are celebrating big with a double dose of thrillers. After a quick detour into book-to-film adaptations (because who doesn’t love debating page vs. screen?), Katie dives into Lisa Jewell’s Don’t Let Him In, a chillingly realistic tale that blurs the line between ordinary life and lurking danger.

Ashley follows with Alex Michaelides’ The Silent Patient, a psychological thriller that grips from the first page and doesn’t let go, serving up twists you can really sink your teeth into. As the ladies trade synopses, the parallels between the two books come into sharp focus, each featuring a web of characters, layered secrets, and twists that demand your full attention.

Whether you crave something eerily plausible or prefer mind-bending psychology, this episode is packed with suspense, surprises, and plenty of book club banter to mark the big 2-0. Hit play to join us in the celebration!

Episode 19: Just Kid(ding) – Meaningful Memoirs and Untrue Crime

In this episode of Bad Ass Bookclub Podcast, we’re misty-eyed over memoirs and just kidding about vigilante justice.

Ashley kicks things off with Everyone Is Lying to You by Jo Piazza, a thriller where a rogue trad-wife influencer proves that not everything on your feed is #authentic.

Katie takes us in a different direction with finishing touches on Just Kids by Patti Smith, a soulful, poetic tribute to art, love, and friendship that easily lands as one of her all time faves.

Then, the ladies come together for their final reflections on Wildflower by Drew Barrymore, part heartfelt, part hilarious, and full of life lessons.

Episode 18: Lives in Print - Getting to Know Drew Barrymore, Patti Smith & Mackenzie Phillips

In this episode of Bad Ass Bookclub Podcast, we’re diving into three very different but equally unforgettable women’s stories. Katie gets misty eyed with Patti Smith’s Just Kids, a beautifully profound tribute to her late soulmate and creative partner. Much praise from Katie, and she’s still got the second half to go! Ashley takes us deep into the trenches with Mackenzie Phillips’ High on Arrival, an unflinching look at addiction, abuse, and survival against all odds. Then, the mood lightens as both ladies reflect on the first half of Drew Barrymore’s Wildflower, a breezy yet heartfelt collection of stories that capture self-reflection, growth, and the messy beauty of evolution.

From gritty confessions to poetic reflections through soul baring snapshots, these books remind us why voices in print matter. Whether you’re here for rock and roll memories, a behind the scenes glimpse, or authentic lessons learned along the way, this episode has a story that will speak to you. Three women, three books, one badass conversation. Let’s go!

With that being said, TRIGGER WARNING! This episode briefly discusses hard drug use and sexual abuse.

Episode 16: So, ACOTAR is Romance – And Other Bookish Breakthroughs

In this episode, we get brutally honest (mostly). Katie is back from vacation and fills us in on her current events. Ashley shares why she still has a long way to go with Hungry Ghosts by Kevin Jared Hosein. Katie kindly keeps her rave review of The Knife’s Edge by Matthew Wolf spoiler free. (It’s that good!) We wrestle with genre expectations as we delve into our non-negotiables for historical fiction and fantasy. We winnow (iykyk) into the second book of the ACOTAR series, A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas, and finally come to terms with the hype. Spoiler alert, it’s not fantasy, it’s romance. Go ahead and hit play to find out exactly how that makes us feel. Baddies, buckle up.

Episode 14: The Truth Is Out There (And So Are We)

This episode of Bad Ass Bookclub Podcast is heavy on the insights, and even heavier on the banter.

Katie starts us off with her favorite entries from UFO’s Who Knows? by Ryan S. Wood and Anthony Delorenzo. We’re sharing what the Dalai Lama has to say about the beings from beyond, time to press play!

Ashley’s feelings on finishing The Shards by Bret Easton Ellis are split into as many pieces as Bret’s personality. She gives a breakdown of the climactic ending and is having trouble letting go (much like Bret).

Last up, the ladies share their thoughts on Chelsea Devantez’s I Shouldn’t Be Telling You This (But I’m Going to Anyway). Spoiler alert, this messy memoir is delightfully divisive.

Episode 13: It’s Midnight, Do You Know Where Your Patients Are?

In this episode of Bad Ass Bookclub Podcast, Katie and Ashley are continuing their mental health (semi- unserious) discussion as they consider unreliable narrators, unstable minds and multiple realities.

Ashley is engulfed in Bret Easton Ellis’ immersive psychological thriller, The Shards. We address the idea of the unreliable narrator and mull over the presence of personality disorders in the main character (remember, we’re not doctors), and of course Ashley has some predictions, hopes and dreams for the highly anticipated big reveal as she comes closer to the final chapters.

Katie breaks down the breakdown that is Ward D by Freida McFadden. In true Freida style, the twists kept twisting until the very last sentence. BIG surprises are revealed, keeping Ashley at the edge of her seat!

We wrap up The Midnight Library in the perfect little package that it is, thanks to Matt Haig’s precious writing, and top it with a bow…AKA our hilarious game of Pass or Slide. Listen now to find out which saucy invention has Katie’s hypothetical, business woman life in a tizzy.

Episode Twelve: American Psych Ward

In this episode of Bad Ass Bookclub Podcast we’re talking about mental health (in the most unplanned, unofficial, WE ARE NOT DOCTORS, sort of way). Ashley’s pick, The Shards by Bret Easton Ellis deals with a paranoid teen and deranged serial killer. Katie’s read, Ward D by Freida McFadden is centered around a medical student assigned to a hauntingly mysterious psychiatric facility. The current shared read, The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, follows Nora Seed – as she takes her own life and finds herself in limbo with the chance to experience her alternate lives in dimensions where different choices were made. All in all, we get deep, but that doesn’t stop the laughs from barging in!

Ashley breaks down the many avenues of consuming The Shards and describes her experience being fully submerged in 1980’s Los Angeles, as Bret Easton Ellis’ writing captivates and immerses. She gives a brief synopsis of the first four chapters, and has some predictions.

Katie talks about her first Freida McFadden experience, which she’s loving so far! She offers a detailed run down of the characters and describes the happenings of the book’s first half. Predictions make their way into the conversation, as always.

Lastly, we discuss the first 100 pages (up to Peppermint Tea) of The Midnight Library. We spend some time pulling unread books from our own libraries as we reminisce about choices made, paths not traveled and personal experience with our own mental health crises.

Episode Eleven: Jules, Jenna, Kasey, Nic and The Empyrean

It’s the end of an (Empyrean) era. In this episode we say “see you later” to our favorite, feisty, fantasy series – wrapping up Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros. But first, we chat about the second half of The Missing Half by Ashley Flowers with Alex Kiester.

We dive headfirst into a swamp of MAJOR spoilers, so readers, enter at your own risk. We circle back to last episode’s predictions, did we hit the nail on the head? No, we’re not Nic. Could Ashley pull off a crime coverup? Could Katie live with the secret? Listen to find out!

Next, we face the fact that Yarros has left us yearning (duh), we have finished the third book of her Empyrean Series. We laughed, we cried, we envied the bond between dragons and riders. We rehash chapters thirty-eight to sixty-six of Onyx Storm and offer our friendly suggestions for the future of The Continent and its riders. What a wild (dragon) ride it has been!

Welcome to a milestone moment for Bad Ass Bookclub Podcast — Episode 10! In this historic DOUBLE SHARED READ episode, your hysterical hosts celebrate ten episodes of bookish banter by taking on The Missing Half by Ashley Flowers with Alex Kiester and continuing on the epic quest for answers in Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros.

First up, we discuss the first half of The Missing Half (chapters 1-23). Together, we unravel the emotional complexities and disturbing secrets in The Missing Half, exploring fractured identities, buried memories, and the consequences of confronting the past. Be warned, Ashley and Katie speak on sensitive content including, but not limited to murder, kidnapping, pediphilia, and the role of law enforcement, vigilante justice and those left behind when a life is taken. We ponder suspects, motives and as always, make predictions.

Next, we shift gears into high-octane action following our favorite Fire-Bringers in Onyx Storm, covering chapters twenty-four through thirty-seven (thanks to Ashley’s lack of self control). We highlight a couple of particularly BAD ASS scenes and share our thoughts on the Quest Squad’s encounters (so far). Is there a Quest Squad patch in your future? We shoot around a few predictions and lightly commiserate in the fact that we have nearly reached the end of the Empyrean line for the foreseeable future. Big, steamy, dragon sigh!

In this episode of Bad Ass Bookclub Podcast no one is who they seem! Ashley starts off with a lengthy, but digestible, summary of the wild rollercoaster ride that is the final half of The Only One Left by Riley Sager (chapters 27-44). Keep your hands and arms inside the vehicle at all times… or you may lose one! Next, Katie rehashes and reviews the final half of First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston (chapters 16-26). Does the protagonist hold up to this reader’s expectations? Yes, and in the most satisfying way! The episode concludes with our discussion of the next section of Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros (chapters 13-23). We are in it and we’re savoring every sentence. We share our favorite moments and insightful predictions. We close the episode with a little twist of our own, our next individual read is one in the same. Episode Eight: WWAD (What Would Ashley Do?)

Buckle up book buddies, Episode 8 is here with sex (kinda), lies and typewriters. Katie kicks things off with a brand new game that’s part personality quiz, part chaos: What Would Ashley Do? Spoiler alert — the answer is probably something morally gray and wildly entertaining. It's the perfect introduction to the first 15 chapters of First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston, and guess what, the lies are winning. Then, Ashley serves up a recap of the first 26 chapters of The Only One Left by Riley Stager. The twisted mystery of who really killed the Hope family and Mary Milton — tells like a fever dream, leaving Ashley second-guessing everyone and trusting no one, is Kit in danger? And just how much? Ash offers some predictions, there’s much to unravel! Lastly, the team tackles the highly anticipated shared read, Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros. The third release in the Empyrean Series is giving high-stakes drama, slow-burn tension, and just enough angst to make you want to throw your book. Classic Rebecca, never misses when it comes to emotional rollercoasters and scenarios you love to scream at. Whether it’s lying, fighting, scheming, or playing detective, all our main characters across these reads are doing whatever it takes for survival — and let’s just say, morals are optional and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
