In this moving episode of Awaz-e-Dosti, our host M. Danish presents two powerful reports from the Afghan refugee community in Pakistan.
In the first report, our reporter Deeba Akbari Kakar speaks with Frishta, an Afghan refugee who shares her heartbreaking journey of living without legal status. Forced to flee Afghanistan with her three young children due to threats and insecurity, Frishta now faces deep uncertainty as her visa has expired and multiple renewal attempts have failed. With little guidance or transparency in the process, she lives in constant fear of arrest and deportation. Her story reflects the struggles of thousands of Afghan refugees trapped in legal limbo, unable to access healthcare, education, or safe employment. Frishta’s voice carries the pain, resilience, and urgency of an entire displaced community searching for safety and dignity.
The second report focuses on a critical yet often overlooked issue: water scarcity in Afghan refugee settlements. This story highlights the experience of Rasheed, an Afghan refugee struggling to secure clean and affordable water for his family. With no permanent water supply, families rely on tankers, but landlords and local actors exploit this need by continuously raising prices. Refugees are left with no choice but to pay high costs for drinking, cooking, and sanitation. This report sheds light on the economic exploitation of vulnerable communities and calls for urgent policy action to ensure refugees have fair access to basic necessities like clean water.
