The Firm
This week we review the 1993 American legal thriller film The Firm directed by Sydney Pollack, and starring Tom Cruise, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, Hal Holbrook, David Strathairn and Gary Busey. The film is based on the 1991 novel of the same name by author John Grisham. The Firm follows Mitch McDeere, a young Harvard Law graduate who joins a prestigious Memphis law firm offering wealth and success. He soon discovers the firm is tied to the Mafia and uses illegal methods to control its lawyers and clients. Torn between loyalty, survival, and justice, Mitch risks everything to expose the corruption and protect his family. The Aussie starts off by asking the Scotsman if his enthusiasm for the podcast is waning - which opens a can of worms the Aussie was not expecting. We discuss a business trip the Scotsman took during the week down to Rosebud and the dog friendly Sorrento, which ends with a story that segways beautifully into the movie. But just before we start to discuss the movie the Scotsman pays the Aussie a MASSSIVE compliment - a well deserved and genuine compliment. As for the movie - well you know we love Tom Cruise - and this is a perfect Tom Cruise vehicle. A great cast, a great story - albeit a little unbelievable. Has it dated? Is it still worth watching - we think it is.
