Welcome to the AusFolkus series of podcasts: Exploring the people and stories behind Australian folk music and dance In these podcasts I’ll be interviewing many of the musicians, dancers, choristers and teachers from the multitude of folk genres that we are so lucky to be exposed to in this country. These are people who have been in front of you in festivals, concerts and dance demonstrations in some cases for decades. Their names will be well known to you and have in many instances been celebrated by you while watching them or perhaps even participating with them while they ply their wondrous art. Theme music: Veligdensko Horo sourced from Linsey Pollak's book "Macedonian Folk Music" ( linseypollak.com )

In this episode I'm with Gary Dawson, folk dancer and dance teacher extraordinaire. Gary has spent much of his lifetime both dancing and teaching the dance to the music of many countries in the Balkans including Serbia, Northern Macedonia, Hungary, Croatia, Greece and Bulgaria. Gary's passion for the dances of this region has been deeply embedded in his life's philosophy which centres on unity through diversity. This is a story of a journey starting in the Mid-West of NSW and still continuing through the many nations of this fascinating part of Eastern Europe.
