Most people entirely underestimate the dangers lurking in the shadows along any spiritual journey. They honestly believe that there are only tasty treats awaiting them at every turn as they skip along merrily from door to door "trick or treating," dressed as they are in the costumes of monsters, demons, witches, etc. The allegory here may seem quaint, but its quaintness masks a Truth which runs deeper than most know. There are setbacks on the Path, to be sure. And these often occur as a result of our failures, set upon by tricks, traps, and tests we should have been prepared for, but were not. Setbacks are one thing, but all out retreat in the face of the adversary is something else entirely. And let us not be so naïve as to doubt such retreats happen.
