Dr. Smith currently holds the position of Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Maxar Intelligence Inc. He began working at the South Carolina Dept of Natural Resources while studying at the University of SC under John R. Jensen in the mid 90’s. At DNR he specialized in deriving land cover, bathymetry, and mapping and monitoring specific habitats from satellite and airborne imagery. Upon completion of a Ph.D. in Remote Sensing from the Geography program, he was hired at EarthSat in 1999, a small remote sensing company in the Washington D.C. area which was then purchased by MDA, and eventually Maxar. While there, over the past nearly 25 years, he has done a little of everything in the satellite remote sensing industry from BD support, proposal writing, measuring precision of imagery, atmospheric compensation, sensor harmonization, automated land cover and change detection generation, bathymetry production, machine learning based tool production, crop yield studies, forest regrowth rates, and even mapping terrain on Mars. He has published multiple peer-reviewed articles and has a patent pending. This podcast is hosted by the ASPRS Early Career Professional Council Officers, Greg Stamnes and Jordan Hicks.
