The power of art to act as a mirror for the artist (a way to reflect back the artist’s thoughts, emotions, and sense of self) is not a concept unique to the field of art therapy.
If you’ve ever created art, in any discipline (music, dance, theater, writing, or visual art) then you likely know what I’m talking about. There’s something about engaging in a creative project that forces you to look at yourself, your identity, and even your place in the world.
And this requires a lot of bravery. It requires the courage to look at yourself in a raw and honest way. It’s not for the faint of heart!
But I think you’ll find that the most powerful and impactful art out there in the world was created with this type of courage and raw vulnerability....
...creative and artistic expressions connect us to each other. AND, they connect us to ourselves. Art has the power to mirror ourselves back to us, and when shown to others, has the power to mirror others too.
