Taiwan is a fascinating country for a lot of reasons. But not least is the fact that it has one of the sharpest population divides of any country that exists today. On its west coast, over 20 million Taiwanese make their home in vast urbanized areas that dominate the landscape. But on its east coast? It's mostly empty aside from a couple small cities and scattered towns. So why don't more Taiwanese live on its east coast?
