Assessing a “Catchment Nervous System:” Can Catchment-Wide Monitoring Restore Health to U.K. Rivers?
The U.K.’s 2021 Environment Act (EA) set ambitious targets for an exhaustive nationwide water quality monitoring program. But putting this legislation into practice raises questions around data reliability and accuracy, reporting transparency and data interpretation, cross-sector collaboration, additional use cases for EA data and how monitoring will translate into remediation efforts. In-Situ’s Tom Stone and Rob Passmore, CEO and Co-Founder of U.K.-based Additive Earth, discuss the U.K.’s way forward as water companies, government bodies, non-profit organizations and other stakeholders navigate the new requirements and begin to strategize about approaches to data collection.
