A podcast from World Animal Protection

Animals Are Calling is a powerful podcast by World Animal Protection that explores the deep connection between animals, people, and the planet. Across two seasons, we uncover the often hidden impacts of human activities on animals, shedding light on the complex emotions they experience, from pain to joy, and exposing the systems that contribute to their suffering. Through expert discussions, real-world stories, and scientific insights, we aim to inspire change and offer practical solutions for a kinder, more compassionate world.

Season One: Exposing Systems of Cruelty

In season one, host Carly Squires is joined by a panel of experts from World Animal Protection to address some of the biggest issues affecting animals today. From global pandemics to the climate crisis, we hold the systems behind animal cruelty accountable, revealing the ways in which industrial practices and environmental destruction harm not only animals but people and the planet as well. Each episode uncovers the root causes of animal suffering and offers actionable steps for how we can work together to dismantle these harmful systems and build a better future.

Season Two: Understanding Animal Sentience and Taking Action

Season two expands the conversation to focus on the deeper meaning of animal sentience and its far-reaching implications. Featuring voices from around the globe, we explore how factory farming, wildlife exploitation, and habitat loss directly affect individual animals, while also examining the science behind their emotions. Contributors share how learning about animal sentience has transformed their lives, businesses, and practices, highlighting what still needs to be done to end cruelty and suffering on a global scale. This season empowers listeners with the knowledge and tools to take meaningful action in their daily lives.

Season You:

Animals Are Calling challenges listeners to not only understand the suffering animals face but to become part of the solution. Why wild animals deserve a wild life

Wild animals in captivity and exploited for tourist entertainment are deprived of a life where they can express their full range of emotions, feelings, and natural behaviours. In this episode we’ll find out why wild animals deserve a wild life and why they should never be in captivity or farmed. We will find out how sentient wild animals suffer in captivity for tourist entertainment and what the travel companies are doing to offer responsible travel options.

In this episode, we talked with:

  • Dr. Helen Lambert: Animal welfare scientist and sentience expert, returns to this episode to explain what wild animals feel in captivity and what is learned helplessness.
  • Carol Buckley - Elephant Aid International: Explains her journey working with elephants in captivity and how that led her to create a Sanctuary for Tara (the first elephant she worked with) and for the recent resident Mundi.
  • Janek Andre - We Whale: Janek shares his experience about how a visit to a dolphinarium at 17 years old marked him forever. After years of looking for opportunities to improve the lives of dolphins in captivity, today he is offering whale and dolphin watching options to tourists who want to see these animals in the wild waters of Tenerife, Spain.
  • Sofie Lund - Nordic Leisure Travel Group & Spies: Sofie’s personal experiences as well as seeing customers seeking more responsible travel options led her to partner with World Animal Protection Denmark to explore wildlife friendly travel options, here she explain more about it.
