The Experience of Violence in the LGBTQ+ Community

Host Jamie Kynn discusses the terminology behind the acronym LGBTQ+ and the similarities and differences between the violence that LGBTQ+ students face compared to their cis-gendered, heterosexual peers. With us in the discussion are Dr. L.B. Klein and Dr. Heather McCauley.

Disclosure: This podcast received support from an Office for Victims of Crime, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice, Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Grant: Subaward VOCA-V-84-20, administered through the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety, Office of the New Jersey Attorney General. The views expressed are those of the speakers and do not reflect the official policy or position of the NJ Office of the Attorney General or Rutgers University.

Host Bio: Jamie Kynn (they/them) is a doctoral student in the School of Social Work at Michigan State University. Jamie received their MA in Gender Studies from Central European University, and their MSW from Rutgers University. Jamie’s research interests include sexual and gender minority youth and the role of involvement in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems as sites of institutional betrayal. With a background in policy evaluation, their research interrogates systemic oppression as it manifests through inter-institutional practices and policies to promote systems change. Their work focuses on producing translational research and developing non-academic research dissemination media.

Name note: At the time of recording the Center for Research on Ending Violence (REV) was still using their former name, the Center on Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC). Over the course of 2020 – 2022, the Center underwent a thorough renaming process.
