"Well, I'm very fortunate that I have a close-loving family and spending Summers with my grandmother. It was eye-opening, and you would think after the lessons I had learned before that point that I would have kept my mouth shut, but no... as far as the writing was concerned. I wanted to watch cartoons. She wanted to watch black and white movies.... And I told that her black and white movies are boring and I could tell better stories with an arm tied behind my back... She got me a stack of pads and a box of pencils and said 'prove it.' So there I was, Charlie Brown style... and when I finished one pad I looked up and she had that tilted head look like, 'What is this kid doing?' So she started reading, and I'm on the second pad, and she stops me from writing and basically [says,] 'Get your jacket, let's go.'
