The Pre-Image Revolution (Season 7, Episode 11)
The Next Generation of Comics: IMAGE!
In this episode, Dan and Mark discuss the events that led to the singlemost impactful shakeup to the modern comics industry since Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s invention of the Marvel Comics Universe. On the pages of the X-Men and Spider-Man line of comics, Marvel had been fostering the careers of superstar artists like Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld, and Erik Larsen. But, when these creatives led Marvel to unprecedented sales and cultural impact, they realized that perhaps they could go supernova, leave Marvel behind, upend the comics industry, and found their own independent comic book publishing company that we know know as Image Comics.
But, as Mark and Dan are hardly encyclopedic experts on the early days of Image, they’ve brought on the UK’s most handsome dhampire, Image Comics expert Josh Sutton from the excellent YouTube channel examining comics and superhero media, Panels to Pixels!
