Influenced by the French cinema new wave movement, Bonnie and Clyde was a movie unlike any American audiences and critics had seen, and it showed in the bad reviews and lack of box office. Then came famed movie critic Pauline Kael and her glowing review, and box office and Oscar nominations followed...but very few wins. Bonnie and Clyde, which influenced the style and substance of such films as The Godfather, Badlands, and True Romance, did not win Best Picture.
