Interview with Ed Russell, CEO of WCS Care, 16 June 2021

Ed has over 29 years’ experience working in health and social care in the not-for-profit sector. Joining WCS Care in 1992, Ed progressed from care worker to home manager, before moving into senior management in 2005. With his proven background in operational management, compliance and quality inspections Ed has led the management of HR, workforce development, health and safety, sales and marketing, and business growth and development.

For the last nine years, Ed has also led WCS Care’s new build programme and the organisation’s use of innovation and technology. In 2016, Ed was instrumental in the creation of the country’s first care sector Innovation Hub, attracting over 700 national and international visitors, and significantly influencing the sector in its approach to the use of technology and innovation.

In his role as Deputy Chief Executive, Ed contributed to numerous national and international events from the National Care Forum and CQC inspector conferences, to the 2020 Senior Living 100 leadership conference in the USA, successfully advocating for the use of technology and innovative approaches in the social care sector to improve the health and wellbeing of care home residents.

Now, as Chief Executive, Ed continues to have an eye on the here and now, as well as the future, believing passionately in WCS Care’s ambition of Every Day Well Lived, whilst constantly striving to develop the care services people will want in the future.

Outside of work, Ed regularly contributes to the family farm where he lives in the Warwickshire countryside, ploughing fields or helping out with lambing. And in his spare time, Ed is a keen cricketer with a passion for classic cars.
