Education is one of the ways to shape and/or protect cultural and linguistic identity: system of secondary and high education can either develop or destroy the traditions, customs, and ties with the environment of indigenous  peoples.
Colonial and post-colonial approaches to the education of indigenous peoples have played — and still play — a largely destructive role. However, in different time periods,  efforts were made to protect the languages and cultures of small peoples while also giving them the chance to access the modern scientific knowledge.
