Adamantly Analog: A Board Game Podcast
Corey Murphy, Harrison Dunn
75 episodes
Corey and Harrison are unapologetically obsessed with board games. They can't get enough of them so they decided that when they're not playing games it would be wise to spend their time talking about them. The jury is still out on that one... Each week, they pick a topic -- games for large groups, games for conventions, games for 'non-gamers' -- and construct a list of favorites. There will be excitement. There will be fury. There will be tangents. If you love board games as much as they do, you'll find good company here.

Ep 70 - "The Teach" and Ruins

We're talking about "the teach" this week! This is such an important element of the board game experience and can either make or break a game for a player. Also, we'll regroup on the latest Allplay card builder game, Ruins, by designer John D. Clair.

Recently Played Games

Corey

  • Ruins, Things in Rings

Harrison

  • First Rat, FlipToons

Featured Topic

Rules for teaching rules!

  1. Do Your Homework! - Learn the game before introducing it to a group
  2. Big to Little - Start with the objective, even if it's just “get the most points” and work your way down (objective -> round structure -> turn structure -> actions -> exceptions)
  3. Use the Game Structure - Use a player aid to structure explanation if one exists and keep the focus on the current step
  4. Allow Questions - Pause and check for understanding/answer questions
  5. Reiterate and Highlight - Reiterate the end game scoring/conditions once players understand the mechanics
  6. Mid-Game Check-In - “Pause” the game to highlight corner case rules after players begin
