Ghana Bread, German Bakery

Ghana and Germany have a lot of cooperative relationships which has existed for a long time. One of the more profound aspects of this is manifested in the music collaboration – Highlife’s funky sub-genre, Borga Highlife. The was crafted and perfected in Germany in the ’70s and ’80s by Ghanaian musicians who had moved there. The name of the genre is a testament to the German city, Hamburg.

This creation of this sound resulted in ‘a cross-cultural fertilization between two nations and two different cultures bearing all the significant hallmarks of co-operation’. The beautiful thing was that it was led by independent creative minds; people from different cultures with different skill sets and backgrounds came together to exchange ideas and by so doing created a new and exciting sound with an instant appeal.

In recent times, the collaboration has grown further, again led by the independence of creative synergies aided by new technologies. In this episode, we highlight one of such, the story of Lukas, a veteran sound engineer from Germany who has already done some major post-production work on some iconic projects: songs on R2Bees’ Site 15 including ‘Straight from Mars’, Jay Bahd’s ‘Condem’, Sean Lifer’s ‘ Ma Drip’, Avit’s ‘Feel Fine’ EP just to name a few.

Enjoy this episode.
