Charging up the show on this episode of A Woman Charged Podcast... Anna interviews Writer and Disability Advocate Zoe Simmons, who wants to raise awareness about the realities of being disabled and living with an invisible illness and all the barriers that come with these conditions.
She wants to tell listeners that… invisible illness exists! And to encourage change, and to help others going through the same thing, to know that they aren’t alone. And that life can still be beautiful, even when you’re in pain. And although she doesn’t want to appear like and I quote “inspiration porn” she does want to show other disabled people that they can still kick butt – it might just look a little different, and take a little longer.
To get these messages across, Zoe works as a writer both in the traditional sense of the word and as an experienced journalist who’s been published hundreds of times across media outlets including news.com.au, the Daily Mail, Kidspot, Popsugar, Mamamia, the Sydney Morning Herald, the New York Post and That’s Life and New Idea magazines and the list goes on — Zoe certainly knows how to captivate audiences through the raw power of storytelling.
Mobility aids are not a tragedy! And some young people have to use them. So consider your everyday ableism, next time you see someone who is in a wheelchair and you wonder why, or when you discover someone you know is in chronic pain, but you have never realised and you fail to see how they have been suffering all this time... And Zoe is here to tell us why.
