"ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ കവിത എഴുതുന്ന ഇന്ത്യക്കാരിൽ പ്രമുഖയായിരുന്നു അവർ. കേരളത്തിൽ മാധവിക്കുട്ടി എന്ന തൂലികാ നാമത്തിൽ എഴുതിയ ചെറുകഥകളിലൂടെയും ജീവചരിത്രത്തിലൂടെയുമാണ് അവർ പ്രശസ്തിയാർജിച്ചത്. 1984ൽ സാഹിത്യത്തിനുള്ള നോബൽ സമ്മാനത്തിന് നാമനിർദ്ദേശം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു."
