#2 A Sanguinary Affair: Military Junta's Propaganda and Myanmar Celebrities

What is the one tradition of your culuture that you hold so dear to your heart? The one tradition that warms your heart, put smiles on your family and just remind you of joy and happy memories. Is it Thanksgiving, Christmas, Luna New Year or something else?  Imagine a scenario where your choice of celebrating that taken away from you by a group of people and have it replaced with grief, despair and sadness?

Would you believe that there is a country of people who ARE unfortunate enough to be experiencing this right now? If you’re guessing it’s Myanmar, you’re 100% correct. The people of Myanmar, including me, were unable to celebrate our traditional New Year Festival, which is known as Thingyan, for four years.

The military junta tried to portray the Thingyan celebration is going on as normal and the country is not at war. And familiar celebrities' faces were there. They military junta and these celebrities were smiling all ears in the photos circulating on social media, knowingly the military junta had committed the deadliest attack on civilians right before Myanmar Thingyan New Year. If we go way back to the history, the junta had a long history of colluding with the celebrities to set propaganda agenda on the people. These celebrities chose to turn a blind eye on the suffering of the people and let themselves be used as the propaganda tool by the military junta, for their own personal benefit. Hence, this is a sanguinary, mutually beneficial exploitive affair between the military junta and these celebrities while the people are being exploited by both of them.
