Chapter 17: Of the Perseverance of the Saints
In this episode, you'll hear a reading of Chapter 17 from the 1689 London Baptist Confession titled "Of the Perseverance of the Saints." This chapter sets forth the confession's doctrine that those who are truly regenerate, being born again of the Spirit, can neither totally nor finally fall from a state of grace. It affirms that the perseverering saints are eternally upheld and kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation. The chapter covers the grounds for this perseverance, such as God's unchangeable love, the efficacy of Christ's obedience and intercession, the Spirit's indwelling, and the nature of the covenant of grace. It also addresses the possibility of believers falling into grievous sins through temptation and the loss of assurance, while asserting that true believers can never fall from grace totally nor finally.
