九州新幹線が全通する前は新八代駅で博多行の特急と接続しており、同じホームで在来線と新幹線が乗り換えする方式が取られていました。かつて博多と鹿児島を結んでいた特急つばめは、新幹線が一部開通した後は「リレーつばめ」と改称して走っていましたが、全通後は在来線の特急列車から「つばめ」の名前が消滅しました。
