2 On January 7, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake shook Dingri County, Tibet. According to Chinese state media, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.8 and killed 126 people and injured 337 others. Associate Professor of Geology Ngawang Tendar argues that there may be a political reason for the Chinese government's use of the seismic Richter scale of 6.8, as seismologists consider earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 6.9 to be major earthquakes, and 6.8 and lower to be moderate waves.
