Residents in Dubai can now get a very different type of manicure: one that involves getting a microchip added to their nails.
Founder of Lanour Beauty Lounge, Nour Makarem, told CNN that her beauty salon developed their smart manicure as a way to support social distancing in the beauty service industry during the pandemic.
The microchips used for the "smart nails" can store names, phone numbers, social media accounts and websites. This means that clients can use their nails as digital business cards.
"I always forget my business cards, you will not forget your nail," said Makarem.
The nails connect to mobile devices using the same kind of Near Field Communication technology that is used in credit cards for contactless payments.
In a video on the salon's Instagram account, a smart phone is shown scanning a nail before the person's name and contact details then appear on the screen. In another video for CNN, Makarem uses the technology to visit the salon's website.
Makarem said that the only difficult part of developing the smart manicure was getting a microchip that was small enough to fit on a fingernail.
