Operating under the gun, doctors were threatened by drugged militants, forced to treat fighters, even kidnapped to treat a warlord’s mother. With other first responders, they protected identities, changed names, stole fuel to keep hospitals and clinics running, they even sedated fighters to prevent a bloodbath. Silent guardian angels, they cheated death, for the sake of life.
